I want my site found in Search Engines – how do I do this?
Tuesday, 5 August 2008

Getting your site found in the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Microsoft Live can be tricky, and although it is possible to "self optimise” a website, getting a good Search Engine Optimiser on board can really help.

To help you understand how search engines work, and to find out what things you can do to help boost your position within a particular search engine, we've listed below some useful links:

Ok, that is all very interesting but I want Trent Moffatt Designs to optimise my site. What will they do?

Key things we will do when optimising your site:

  1. Look at what content on your site (particularly your home page) needs changing to help boost position for your given keywords.
  2. Add relevant META tags (keyword, title and description tags). These are invisible tags “behind the scenes” that help search engines catalogue your site.
  3. Consider implementing a News section on your home page (and encourage you to continue updating this content). Sites that are kept up to date usually rank higher then those sites that don't.
  4. Build an RSS Feed
  5. Map particular pages on your site to be search engine friendly. I.e instead of www.yourcompany.com.au/page1.html. We may change this to www.yourcompany.com.au/gold-coast-accounting-services.html (this is assuming you are an accounting company)
  6. Help you setup a Blog about your relevant keywords
  7. Help you setup You Tube, Facebook and MySpace areas which provide valuable links (and further copy for search engines to crawl).
  8. Validate your site with search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Ninemsn
  9. Build sitemaps (these are files that help search engines find pages on your site).

Note – if your search engine optimiser isn't implementing most of these things you should probably ask why they are not!
