If you use outlook, you may have noticed when you receive an email, rather than seeing a person’s email address you see a name instead. This is because Outlook “hides” the email and replaces it with the person’s name.
This is normally not an issue. However, when your web developer builds your website, sometimes this website will send you an email (e.g. when someone orders a product, or when someone contacts you via a contact form).
Your web developer will need to confirm that you’ve received a particular email via a particular address. And sometimes when you receive this email, outlook removes the email address, and replaces it with a name instead (which can be misleading).
Imagine a situation such as this:
- When someone orders a product for your website, an email is sent to you.
- Let’s say this email comes from online-orders@yourcompany.com.au.
- Your Outlook, or internal mail server, has been configured so that it thinks online-orders@yourcompany.com.au is actually “John Smith”.
- Hence, whenever you receive orders from the website, they appear to come from “John Smith”.
To solve this issue, contact your IT support. To confirm what the actual email address is, follow these steps:
- In the email, double click on the person’s name in the “From” field
- This will reveal the actual email address the email comes from.
